If you just look at pure numbers, it does seem that way doesn't it. Even a few hundred people burning themselves wouldn't cause a major dent in the population though compared to the tremendous level of attention burning yourself gets. It shows how committed these people are to their purpose and how their livelihood is rendered meaningless because of it. Its the ultimate form of protest.

I know most of the western world, protesting is done via attacking the other person. Although not always the case, there is a lot of self-inflicted violence in East and South Asia because they don't believe harming others will create any positive long term result. That is all.

Vietnam ≠ Vietnam War. I imagine, that is why you mentioned "there is no war in Tibet against a foreign power", because Vietnam had a war against a foreign power, right?

Well for one, Tibet technically did have a one sided war waged by a foreign power, a power called Communist China which is foreign to Tibet. China administers the Tibetan area present day, but what they're doing there is no better than what the Japanese did to the Chinese. Kind of ironic in a sad way when you think about it.

Most importantly, even if you were right and Tibet was not dealing with a foreign power, that has nothing to do with Vietnam dealing with the US, the monks burned themselves because of persecution of monks and Buddhist BY the South Vietnamese government.

No. When the Buddhist monks started setting themselves on fire in Vietnam it got the whole world's attention and really gave a lot of energy to the war protesters.
We need to help the Tibetans.

I, too, have gotten in the bad habit of setting Tibetans on fire in protest of stuff and things...

If only they wanted it bad enough to fight for it like everyone else has and many today who are actively fighting to gain their own freedom.

Sorry but this is stupid. What does this accomplish for the Tibetan people? I makes for sensational headlines and photos but doesn't bring them any closer to being free of China. This is just a sad waste of life.

Karma for being more political than being more religious?

I never understood this strategy. Aren't they doing their oppressors a favor by doing this?

You do get that there is no war in Tibet against a foreign power right? The Chinese are well aware of the oppression of their government. Some monks offing themselves isn't going to enlighten them any further on this subject.

Why do monks have desire for political sovereignty and independence? Do religious teachings encourage that?

Appalling oppression continues in China while we in the West largely turn a blind eye. Iran is also getting less attention than it rightly should. How do we deal with oppressive regimes like this? Larry Haas, Al Gore's former spokesman, has an interesting piece here on what to do about Iran using Hitler and Mao as examples: http://bit.ly/xaXxZq

What about occupy wallstreet protests? Do protests work? Have you seen Obama indict those wallstreet banksters yet?

One of my best friends is an avid fan of Tibetan culture. One of my favourite American writers is a Buddhist. I do feel sorry for Tibetan people, and I wish them freedom.
