Yes, children are kidnapped from time to time, but it's extremely rare. That's why it makes the news. On top of that, the kidnapper usually is someone the child/family knows, more often than not. So should we go overboard to protect our children from a very rare possibility and never let them have any independence ever? Or should we teach what to do in case that rare something happens? This girl did exactly what she was taught to do, and it worked. How is this a story of parental failure? This is a victory!

I tell my kids to never go quietly and I instruct them about diffusion of responsibility, too. I tell them to yell, but also to point or call out to specific people, including describing them so they cannot hide in the crowd and must act to help them.
Her friend is totally messed up with a mother that hovers over her. Anytime she gets upset, mom comes to the rescue. She is down to my daughter as her last remaining friend. That is going to crash next year for I hear the friend's mom is going to protect her some more with home schooling. That kid will be isolated from the whole freaking world at that point.
