Seriously? Death threats are crimes. Suicide is considered a crime. You can't think of any circumstances where someone should be institutionalized before they kill or harm someone physically? It's a subjective matter, I'll give you that. But when the warning signs are there, someone should try to intervene at some point.
Review your facts. Suicide is not a crime in the United States, nor should it be. As for death threats, illegal as they may be, they usually do not constitute legal grounds for incarceration, and certainly not commitment.
To "intervene at some point" and to "[lock someone] up in a sanitarium" are two entirely different things. The former is advisable and wise, the latter is an abortion of justice and immoral.

Again, being for Utah i followed this story from the get go....Right around the time of this killer blew himself and his boys up, his father was arrested for child porn...and he used to watch the boys on a regular basis! When you are a good Mormon. such things are deemed normal and swept under the proverbial rug....one of the most popular Mormon sayings is "keep it in the family" Unfortunately, many of these sick cultists take that to the extreme....incest is all too common in this cult religion!

The fact that he killed his children's father and his children is F'd up, but let's just call a spade a spade here and not be suckers for the usual sensationalism.
As soon as the axe came up - that's when I knew we'd get a history of the Crazy. Crimes of passion are crazy things and being accused of killing your wife could drive any man to insanity, I could even think the fire was just more desperation, but the hatchet?

Actually, it sounds like the exact twist everyone should have expected from this nutball. Kudos to everyone involved who could have stepped in and gotten this man the help he needed (preferably in 9mm dosages.) Great job dealing with the insane.
