Hmm....the total population of Iran is around 75 million, including all ages. Why do I have trouble believing that virtually every adult in Iran apparently has an email account...?
It seems as if many of you do not realize that Iran looks very much like the US suberbs and is not a desert city full of enemies training on monkey bars. Their government was stolen by extreme crazy people.. Which we could also relate to in the US to a degree.
Criminal gangs will love this. Imagine the damage done to the Iranian economy when miscreants realize that all traffic in Internet cafes and many homes -- not to mention universities and businesses -- is up for grabs.
Stuff that society thought was protected from criminals will soon be up for grabs.
Everywhere else, it will still be protected.
It would be surprising if criminal elements did not move to Iran to take advantage of the low hanging fruit.
Banning HTTPS will have very interesting, unfortunate consequences.
If they say how long the policy will last, criminals will know how long to lease their apartments for instead of wasting money on expensive month-to-month rentals.
Or they expect war soon and want to cut off any contacts they have withing the Iranian population to try and limit the intel the attacking forces have access to.
Sorry if this comment seemed ignorant. It was intended to be a half joke, because of the way that the media always portrays under-developed countries, Iran being a great example. Every time you see Iran in the news, it's always people dressed in rags riding camels through the desert. They want us to think that these people are all savage cavemen living like it was 2,000 years ago.
My comment was intended to be taken as a mockery of this type of media portrayal. Sorry if it offended anyone.
Indeed. A friend of mine from Iran told me that in her last visit back to tehran over the holidays, she was surprised to find the streets littered with Porches/ Benz/range rovers, and people rocking iphone/ipads/smartphones like crazy. It's not at all like what most people here in the US would think of the middle east.
