This is sad, but also amazing! That this kind of unconditional love exists in the world speaks of hope and courage. What a lucky woman to have found such a love, even tho it will take much pain and time before she can know it!
seeing as the article mentions that the wife is 61 its likely he was also in his 60's. As such its also easy to conclude hes likely not a water rescuer...
Easy to make all these claims siting in a nice warm house without thousands of people panicking and screaming everywhere. I am sure people in the cold water were very freaked and disoriented and not able to look at multiple photos to determine that shore was close, and the ship was not completely sinking. First thing is to get away from the ship in case it was going down, after that, most would be pretty tired from the swim and the cold water.
Have you ever swam four or five hundred yards in 57 degree water?
Cruising is safer than it ever has been. It's just there are an order of magnitude more boats out now than there used to be, and there are always going to be accidents.
On the other hand, after this I would never sail on any ship with a predominantly Italian crew. Although it may appear bigoted to say so at first glance, the simple truth (that ANYONE who has been to an airport in Italy knows) is that Italians have no sense of order, or lines in general.
I would still happily get on a cruise tomorrow. In fact that would be the best time as you know at least over the next few months crews are going to be EXTRA careful.
As for the expense - nonsense, fuel is a tiny part of the cost and increases just mean a surcharge on your bill. When fuel costs have risen in the past it's meant no more than $20-$50 extra per ticket. FOr the number of people they move cruise ships are actually about as efficient in terms of fuel as an SUV!
I think the cruise industry will run out of steam. They've had problems with contaminated water making the people aboard sick, crew raping female passengers, engine/power dying at sea, and now capsizing after running aground.
The price of fuel is going to continue to rise and that's going to make it too expensive. Corporations don't pay attention to safety like they did decades ago. Cruise ships just seem inherently a little more dangerous without much point than other kinds of vacations. There wasn't room for modern corporations to cut corners on safety like industries do these days.

Nicole Servel blames the loss of her husband on the ship's crew, some of whom saved themselves without helping any passengers

Finally a good story that shows off humanity in a good light. So tired of only hearing how evil we are.

Fuel is not a major concern. They'll just keep shortening the routes.

Aaaawh.... that's heartbreaking.

Why have cruise ships been in the news so much the last several years?

I salute you, sir.

It is because the main screw could not go in reverse. Even when the other two were in reverse, the main was always in forward. It was a stupid design.

It seems like they have inverted the meaning of the original lyrics in the theme song of the show about the cruise line.

It definitely does not work anymore.
