I'm surprised no one has volunteered to hit that yet. I guess because she is underage. Good for you, diggers! Way to exercise self-control!

It's not a sailboat moron, its a f**ken luxury yacht with all kinds of high tech equipment that even a blind person can find its way back to shore.

I bet she would not have tripped and fell into a life boat if s**t got hectic.

Yeah right. You wouldn't make it around the world by yourself in a sailboat.

I bet given a year of training he would. People have been crossing oceans for centuries with a lot less technology to keep them safe than we have available today.

A year of training plus the feeling of immortality you have when you are 16 and ya, you bet ur ass he would get into that boat.

We need more people like this. She is an example to the rest of us internet plonkers. At 16, she has already achieved more than me - and I am 46 yrs old.

Gefeliciteerd, Laura. Fantastic achievement!

You know not everything a young person does is an attempt to be recognized, sometimes its about living dreams and seeing if you have what it takes to face the World on your own. She's been around boats since birth, its something she loves, its a pretty natural that a young woman would want to test her limits and see if she can make her dream happen.

Your ignorance is astounding. There is no official record for this, and Guinness has specifically disavowed any age-based record, so as not to encourage ever younger participants. Moron.

Perhaps we should mount a private rescue operation to see if can find any sign of a single functioning neuron in your brain.

She says Guppy, her boat, is a good listener! LOL! I agree with her about being alone: "Her entry on Christmas Day explained her love of solitude: "This way I don't have to go visit the family and be so kind to everyone, I don't have to eat dinner, even a good one, if I don't feel like it just to be polite, and what about all that talking, talking … Here Guppy is a very good listener and she never contradicts me." :)

These boats go for 60 - 70K. All I can think of is Veruca Salt.

She took on six-metre-high waves and extreme weather – on one occasion, heading in to the Cape of Good Hope, her storm jib (a sail used in storms) got jammed and she finally managed to take it down in the early hours of the morning. Another of her sails ripped completely during the voyage. She slept on a damp bed and lived on rice and pasta, with cookies and pancakes as an occasional treat. She dodged near-collisions with cargo ships, and worried about pirates. Not in the least squeamish, she had to rescue live flying fish that had flung themselves into her cabin, and scrub the stinking remains of decomposing squid from the deck. She survived weeks at sea with no company – except for the ants and c**kroaches that had stowed away in her cabin. On top of all that, she had to do schoolwork.
It wasn't a fun trip on a comfortable luxury yacht. So shut the f**k up moron!

"Dekker spent the first four years of her life at sea.[6] At six, Dekker owned her first boat, an Optimist, and learned to sail it herself. The next boat she received at the age of ten was a Hurley 700. She named it Guppy and used it for solo-sailing during her multiweek-long summer vacations; her trips included the Wadden Sea and the North Sea.[7] In May 2009, Dekker made a solo-crossing from Maurik, Netherlands to Lowestoft, England where local authorities requested her father to come and accompany her on her return voyage.[8]"
