What a line of bulls**t. Laborers work damned hard, and never get rich. Even decent wage-earners stand little chance of getting rich because once they make a decent wage half is taken as taxes, and thanks to the Fed their savings have a negative return.

There are three ways to get rich today. One, be born rich. Two, take take massive risks and beat the odds. Three, start a business and be one of the minority that don't fail.

With income tax high and capital gains and interest rates low, we're forced to put our money at risk to keep it from inflating away. And guess who wins if we fail in those risks? The ones who already have money, in most cases. This is not one party working against us; it's the whole system.

"I think there's only so many people that can take care of themselves, and can take care of other people. And the rest of the people … they're useful in terms of compost for the whole planet, you know."

Beautifully said Bill. Bravo sir!

Yes, but the comment to which I was replying said all you have to do is work hard, and that everyone single person who works hard will be a millionaire.

I think being one of the best countries in the world, if someone is sick they should be able to go to the doctor. Or if a kid is hungry they should be able to eat. And I think all children should have equal opportunity for education. The differences between the schools in the nice side of town and in the bad side of town are sickening.

I don't think people should be given a free ride. I don't think anyone thinks that, honestly. That would be f**king ludicrous. You would have to be an idiot to think a large percentage of people in this country feel that way.

Actually it seems conservatism is making its way into Hollywood. It's not as evil as it used to be to be a conservative in that town.

No. I do what I can as well to help people I see on the street in need and I am in no way rich. If everyone did things would be much different. It would be a better world. Sadly far too many people expect the other man or the government to help those in need.

Except that Bill Murray says that while enjoying the benefits of union membership and a union insurance plan.

I'm a big fan of Murray's, enjoy his work and agree with his basic premise here, but Murray forgets that he reaps the benefits from collective power every day. Just because he does not need it as much as he used to, or as much as others might, that does not mean it is outdated, unnecessary or useless.

Money didn't just jump in to his pocket. He has worked a lifetime to get to where he is.

'He's not like me, he has money. He is the one percent, I am in the poor 99%'.
'I don't have money, so someone needs to take care of me, I need breaks from someone, I need to be pitied, I neeeeeed, I am entitled'.
How do you think most people got their money, including Mr. Murray? Have you ever thought through it that far?

I'm one of those better wage earners, and that's just a consistent guideline of what we see with any raises (which are of course based - pre-tax - on inflation). It seems like it should be less, with 'only' about 28% federal plus 9% state plus local, payroll, and other various other taxes, but that's just always how it works out.

You seem to be arguing over my total effective rate, when I was just talking about the marginal burden applicable to any raises. My intent wasn't to spur some "discussion" about tax rates, other than to point out reasons why even good wage earners are highly unlikely to get rich from wages alone.

Ah, that would certainly make more sense! There are so many people willing to post crazy opinions on the internet that it can be hard to pick out sarcasm if the poster doesn't include a /s.

He was successful because he was in a Union? Hardly. The SAG serves more to keep people out than to do anything to help. Ask any actor how difficult it is to get your SAG card and then ask any actor what you can do for work when you don't have one. They have created a catch-22 that protects the few in the Union.

You won't get rich working for someone else. You have to put yourself out there and take some risks to be rich in this country because no one is going to give it to you.

And if they are, send them my way. Teaching pays crap, but at least some of my former students aren't doing too badly. Some are already making more than I am.
