While everyone was distracted taking down SOPA and PIPA, the ACTA bill was being passed. They took one for the team so their bigger friend could make it out.
I know its probably already said, but ACTA is the bigger badder version of SOPA/PIPA. To bring to this a better perspective. ACTA was coming along long BEFORE SOPA/PIPA was even proposed.
ACTA has been going around the planet for a few years now. The fact that we are even discussing it now, is kinda appalling because nearly a year ago, I was reading about the first leaks of the whole treaty, and the fact it was ONLY being discussed behind closed doors.
However this is only a Treaty, As in, All Nations signed to this Treaty, will commit resources to writing their own legislation towards piracy prevention. So when we talk about ACTA, we are talking about a International agreement to write bills to block/stop piracy. Now when you think about SOPA/PIPA, you come to the realization, ACTA is what would require (the Signed Nations) to enforce at home. Yeah, SOPA/PIPA is a smoke screen, but you need to realize, SOPA/PIPA was our local version of what ACTA would require us to create.
Now, since more than likely the USofA is a co-sponsor and signer of ACTA, its also a double-face move for us to Protest so loudly against SOPA/PIPA when we are also the ones pushing this type of legislation to the rest of the world. Think, Mexico and our War on Drugs. USA tells Canada & Mexico to stop over the border drug trafficking, at the same time, we protest and make it legal in certain states for the very drugs we tell them to stop on their own territory.
This is just another blight on the actual lobbyists/corporations trying to control what people can do with their free time. (and money... they want more of our money)
Using the pretext of ACTA being a trade agreement, secret negotiations, participants having to sign non-disclosure agreements. No public discussion, no democratic scrutiny: A true party for the lobbyist from MPAA and RIAA pushing their interests at the cost of privacy, access to information. Fully supported by the US government.
You would s, but the world is changing and treaty are going to start working like laws. It is happening all over the world. Think this is the backdoor Washington is using when a law can't pass. Just sign a bunch of bad treaties and let them become the laws.
It allows media industries to threaten Internet service providers legally when their Internet users infringe.
It also makes it hard for poorer countries to break patents in order to produce cheaper drugs to combat diseases in those countries.
Most of all, ACTA is vague. It basically allows rich media industries to arrest people in other countries as witnessed when a kid from the U.K. was extradited for just having a link to copyrighted material. Or when the FBI overstepped its bounds in New Zealand.
Countries that secretly signed ACTA without the approval of anyone.
United States
The European Union and 22 Member States
Australia
Canada
Japan
Morocco
New Zealand
Singapore
South Korea
Unfortunately it worked. Thing is, since the guidelines were all done in secrecy without the benefit of our elected officials (not that they are much help lately anyway) present, it's all part of the blueprint to get this passed.
The Constitution is a dead piece of paper and the only elected official that matter is his highness the king and that drug up SOB and MAC Daddy is going to do whatever he wants and pass into law whatever he wants, with or without Congress.
From my recollection, Bush brought it before the Senate around '08, if I'm not mistaken. I'm not condoning what Obama's done. I'm just stating that all of our politicians suck.
Your comment bashed Obama which makes it seem like the Republicans didn't agree with ACTA, anomaly was stating that Bush and the Republicans had a hand in it to. Anomaly is not condoning what Obama did, she is saying what she literally pointed out to you - "all of our politicians suck." - as in Obama and Bush.
When you talk about a president, obviously you're going to get a comparison to the last president...especially when they're on opposite sides of the spectrum.
It’s not their internet either, and as long as we have a chance of preventing record companies and other such entities from effectively buying it for themselves, we should take it. By “our” internet, I obviously meant the internet as we know it.
SOPA and PIPA decoys to distract from ACTA. Yeah, saw it coming and warned about it. You can't beat corporate money, though. A million dollars is a doggie treat to them now. Who wouldn't roll over for a doggie treat?
Whilst the world dies, wars are started over monopoly money created by corporations. $20M/yr. Right. Show me a single person with a million in cash in their home. Banks won't insure over $100,000 dollars. You can't even carry that much. It's a joke.
Savings so large, nothing can be done with it other than invest the imaginary billions into something else. So large it can't be printed without funding the print job to do so. I'd say that's a problem. First world problem?
Would someone win so we can start the game over? Or are we destined to continue to play monopoly with people and ideologies?
You better read up on the Supremacy Clause of the Constitution. Treaties become "The Law of the Land" and the "Highest Form Of Law"... which is exactly why the President chose to have SOPA and PIPA as the smoke screens...

Were they distracting us with SOPA & PIPA only to unleash a larger beast?
southsideirishJan 28, 2012Buried
That is what Adam Curry of NoAgenda was thinking. He read the two bills and thinks SOPA was the smoke which would allow ACTA to pass.

As I understand it, ACTA is an agreement between countries to all pass legislation like SOPA. It is not enforceable like a law is.

Yea, let's just give up and let them take us over...we mid as well just make ourselves complete slaves.../s
A government has no power without it's people.
Not to mention there are plenty of wealthy and powerful companies that have a heavy position against this.
