FTA - "In the United States, several states including Louisiana, California, Oregon and Arizona have laws allowing chemical castration."

I honestly had no idea that the US did this, especially the state right next to mine.

Wiki:
Chemical castration is the administration of medication designed to reduce libido and sexual activity, usually in the hope of preventing rapists, child molesters and other sex offenders from repeating their crimes. Unlike surgical castration, where the testes are removed through an incision in the scrotum,[1] chemical castration does not actually castrate the person, nor is it a form of sterilization, hence the term "chemical castration" has been called a misnomer.

I see no problem with this.

don't put your penis next to a 4 year old and you'll be fine.

I always imagine them dipping your balls in acid.

Because that's permanent. Chemical castration can be be reversed once you stop taking the medication.

Not that I have any sympathy for these bastards, but disfigurement falls under "cruel and unusual" in my mind.

I think calling it 'chemical castration' makes it sounds way more horrific than it is. From my understanding, it's medication that completely suppresses your libido and inhibits any sexual desire or activity - which, in the case of pedophiles, sounds like an excellent idea.

I don't think it will solve everything, but removing the desire for children certainly sounds like a positive to me.

I have to say, too that on some level I feel very sorry for the individuals who are afflicted with such urges. The abuse of a child is absolutely horrific and completely inexcusable - but imagine what kind of a hell it would be, to be trapped with those kinds of feelings. Some of them have to know that their desires, which they often have no control over, are inherently wrong. I don't doubt there are some people that would welcome something like 'chemical castration'.

The only flaw in the system that I can see is that it's reactive, not preemptive,. If there was a way to offer this to people who felt they needed it, with a thorough evaluation and mandatory counseling, I think it could be really beneficial to those who truly need it.

Because it takes millions and millions of taxpayer dollars to keep them in prison for that long?

In the US I know the tally is way over 200 people that have been given the death penalty and later been exonerated through new evidence. There will be people wrongfully convicted.

Seeing as chemical castration is administering medicine to reduce or remove the urges, and is no way linked to physical castration, really, I don't see how it would be different?

Niiiice.

I actually think the sex offenders would very much like not feeling any self-destructive urges. They could get on with their lives without any shame and without hurting any other people.
