Ritchie invented products that were used by many, but most did so unknowingly, except the geeks like me, who recognize his involvement and genius.
Jobs is known for products that many consumers use every day and relate to him directly because he is/was the face of Apple.
If UNIX was popular with the masses, and Ritchie was the face of UNIX, the media would have been all over his life/death as well...but that's not the world we live in.
The keyword here is "consumers". As a programmer, I was equaly sadden by the death of both, but there is a lot more consumers than programmers out there.
Two men have died, an you catty assh**es can only play this nerd game? They are both heroes and screw anyone who says otherwise, including the submitter.
Not to mention that Apples own MacOS X is based on Unix, written with Objective C, and all the iPhone apps are written with a language that wouldn't be possible without this guys work..
Very true. but some people just hate Steve Jobs and Apple with a blind passion so they've taken this opportunity to turn this man's death into a digital dick measuring contest.

I think it's more like Edison vs the guy that invented the glass used for the bulb.
UNIX and C are building blocks. If I'm the guy that invented cement and someone creates a monument out of cement that the world adores, I don't deserve credit for the monument.
Me personally, Ritchie is my hero 8 days a week. But that's because I'm a programmer and geek at heart. But I don't expect the rest of the world to begin to identify with that.
Give Jobs some credit, he really pushed the envelope in your everyday life, even if you've never used an Apple product.

Considering that most webservers and smartphones runs UNIX or Linux I'd say it's pretty damn popular.

Steve Jobs didn't invent the mouse. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mouse_(computing)
I used log on to BBS all the time. No graphical interface there.
Incidentally Jobs didnt invent that either. It was the mouse guy again.

After all the gushing words of blind adoration, perhaps it's time for a reality check. Both had beards. Only one was a genius.

Both men should be missed.

How is it the fault of "Apple fanboys" if the general public isn't recognizing Dennis Ritchie?

MacOS X *is* Unix and iOS is based on it. Developers know who he was and won't forget. RIP both of you.
