So the US shuts down a New Zealand based company and charges it owners. It's not SOPA and PIPA that people should be protesting, but the US government.

Soooo what happens to all the legitimate users that stored data on Megaupload? They just lose all their stuff because the MPAA wants to nail a couple pirates instead of updating their ridiculously outdated business model?

I've tried to download stuff from Megaupload before and gotten a "this file was removed due to a copyright violation", so I assumed they where at least somewhat complying.

"An indictment accuses Megaupload.com of costing copyright holders more than $500 million in lost revenue from pirated films and other content."

This is horses**t. Piracy does not equal lost revenue.

Anecdotal evidence time!

"A friend of mine" borrowed Saints Row for PC, and thought it was fun for what it was trying to do - spent about 2 hours in the campaign, would not have bought the game either way. This "friend" told another friend what he thought of the game, said friend goes out and buys it for XBOX.

The owner was in new zealand , its based in west virginia .Since the feds pretty much lost sopa and pipa the riaa and mpaa assh**es hit next .They really bit off more then they can handle here since internet users stored a lot of personal data that of course the feds can now access since it is guilty until proven innocent it seems .

I know it's direct download, but that should make it easy for the MPAA to remedy! It's not like there are hundreds or thousands of people uploading/downloading the same file, like in the case of torrents. If it was direct download, then they could identify what files where illegal and request that megaupload take them down.

Taking down the entire site is equivalent to nuking a city just because it has some shoplifters living in it.

New York City has all kinds of murders, thefts and rapes. Should we shut down New York because of that? I think not. Of course Megaupload has illegal software, but they're shutting down a MASSIVE web site that has huge amounts of legal content. I'm sure YouTube has all kinds of illegal content that infringes on copyrighted material as well, should YouTube be shut down? Digg and Reddit are the same; that's the point, the US government does not and should not have the power to shut down any website they want without any legal authority.

What about Amazon's data storage? I'm sure there's some copyright protected materials there too. Why not just shut down amazon.com too Feds?

My GOD! Who the f**k is running this country now?

They were complying, anyone who has ever even paid any attention knows that.

It's just another "It's ok to destroy freedom to catch a non-criminal" argument.

You can thank Anonymous for shutting down justice.gov as a response to this:

He's a German national, actually. The U.S. is claiming jurisdiction because of a two servers physically in Virginia.

He has a long history of fraud, insider trading, and embezzlement.

I will agree the US government generally thinks it's laws apply outside it's borders which is simply not true.
