As someone who has been studying towards earning a arm full of Degree based on cisco networking tech and sleeve of certs. I will agree Cisco is damn expensive and doesn't like to give anyone a break not even those people like me who is trying to get educated in how to use their hardware and software, so that a a company can hire them to purchase/support their products. While through my college I have access to MSDNAA, cisco has of yet to offer Network Academy access to the software, and your talking thousands of dollars just to get access to wide varieties of IOS variants and software like Security Device Manager, which their curriculum is centered around.
So yeah, I'm gonna agree with the most expensive part.
You can get the IOS through your educational institution. I've just completed CCNA1,2,3,4 + Security and my teacher gave me a copy of the IOS when I asked him, he has an account on behalf of my school so has access to all the downloads.
As a student you can get Packet Tracer for free which allows you to sim quite a lot of the labs, once you get a hold of the IOS you can use something like GNS3 for more accurate sims.
I feel like there should be some sort of comment about Ellen Page here. I miss old Digg when there were hundreds of comments on every front-page story.
