Been a Reddit user and lurker since 2005~2006, but now a refugee. Very recently opened a Digg account because Reddit has gotten increasingly retarded, racist and juvenile over time. Unfortunately, as with many communities, the growth in the user base has translated to the drop in quality of content. Reddit circa 2007 (before sub-reddits really existed) had very fascinating content from a very mixed range of topics. The stuff that ends up on the front page now generally appeals to the lowest common denominator. I feel like Reddit is no longer a web aggregate site, but a BBS for circle-jerking pubescent meme-bots.
Remember when Digg had all the power... It made the whole world pay attention when the community got involved (DVD decryption keys, Obama election, Ron Paul movement)...
Now it has only a sad shrinking existence to look forward to. I never thought I would say this, but I might start a Reddit account.
Frankly, not surprised. Never thought I'd say this, but Reddit rocks. In fact, half the stuff on Digg's front page is now just copied from Reddit. And the other half comes from those sites Digg wants to promote.
Really miss those days when cool stuff from unheard of websites made the front page here...just like it does all the time on Reddit.
I did. My eyes still hurt. I just cannot get used to their layout - it is absolutely awful, However, their site is speedy and much better used than this - unfortunately.
Reddit is all split up though, when we had an article hit front page, everyone saw it, on reddit, if you don't show a certain section, you could be missing out.. I'm hoping digg's traffic doubles or triples at the very least...
I don't know what exactly you are going to find over there. They have the numbers, but with it comes some of the most retarded comments and submissions the internet can manifest. Don't get me wrong I really appreciate the few sub-reddits I regularly follow, but if quality content and discussions without a meme/troll picture every third comment have any value to you I would stick to Digg.
Look at digg's front page right now. It's all news, interesting or informative articles, etc. Out of the 40 odd links on the front page in total, there is only two posts that don't seem informative.
Now look at Reddit.. I rest my case. I think both sites offer something the other doesn't. Maybe we need to all realize that while Digg & Reddit at one point were direct competitors, that the two sites offer very different experiences and clearly cater to very different demographics now.
It frustrating as hell here on Digg. It almost does no good to submit a new site or at least one that you might come across that has never been submitted before. Not a snowball's chance in hell that it will hit.
Would you rather I use the word "retarded" to describe kids with Down Syndrome? I genrally use "mental disability" for those kinds of conditions. I prefer to reserve the word retarded for people with idiotic opinions. Sorry if I offended.
I agree but some subreddits can still offer some very good information and discussions. With more people comes more chaff and bulls**t.
Playing devil's advocate reddit may feel that the decline happened during the bleed off from digg's attempt to reinvent itself and subsequent bleed off of users. The quality of comments at digg along with the number of users at digg has taken a dive. Political discourse is at a all time low with a lower amount of users, the same insults more easily float to the top.
I still hang out at both locations as both offer enough to keep me interested. I don't follow the fanboy competition as me being a sole member of one or the other is stupid really, both offer different experiences.
Quickly it becomes a Digg vs Reddit thing. Well, I have been on Digg since 06, and I am about ready to pull the plug and go to Reddit. The comments about crap posts, bad layout there are true. But they don't have the Digg bar. The thing is both evil and stupid. If you are logged on, you can opt out. If you are not logged on, you can not opt out. And, the functionality of the bar requires being logged in! It is backwards.Visitors, or people who do not want to log in for whatever reason, are forced to endure a bar that is not functional for them. It is like they are trying to bully you into logging in. All it would take to make it right is to change the default for the bar to off. Making it OPT-IN. But I will not hold my breath. I believe the motivation behind it is evil. So what about it Digg? Care to prove me wrong and do the right thing?
If you're looking for quality comments you should stay the hell away from digg, though. Most of the users that posted worthwhile comments jumped ship with version 4 and the rest have been slowly dropping off ever since. All that's left are trolls and spammers.
Do it. It's the best internet decision I ever made. It's leaps and bounds better than Digg ever was. And get this: You don't have to be a power user to get to the front page.

Let's get real honest... you got busted with multiple accounts on reddit in an attempt to spam for gaming sites.

This news should be an eye opener for Digg. Digg has to execute different strategy to make the customers/users engaged and make repeat visits.
