Rates of violence in this country have dropped significantly since 1993, the year Doom came out. Rates of teen violence have dropped even more dramatically.
Since violent video games became popular, violence has been on the decline. That's probably just a coincidence, but it makes it unlikely that video games are a major contributor to violent crime.
IMO violent video games act as an effective release for anger or aggression. Come home from a bad day at work and playing L4D2, Orcs Must Die, or just hitting up GTA IV or Saints Row 3 to just plow into pedestrians will instantly make you feel better.
When Columbine happened, Lots of people did research on video game violence's correlation to "act out" video game fantasies.
It was found that violent people choose to play violent video games.

Here's a deeper question. I think eventually, everyone will meet someone with a substance abuse problem. But specifically, lets look at weed (marijuana). The potheads who have a strong recursive thought that weed is excellent have detestable attitudes. However, it's not from the weed.
Yet, publicly we:
-Blame weed for people's attitudes and actions
-Use weed as a stereotype to judge people
There are people that control their marijuana usage reasonably.
There are those who just don't get when weed is inappropriate.
I think they have a negative effect on people, but it's more along the lines of insensitivity and apathy. Almost all people are quite capable of separating fantasy from reality, but enjoying gore even on a fantasy level is going to have an effect on someone's personality. Young children have nightmares from that kind of thing because they are more sensitive and imaginative. As they get older and become deadened by the violence in the world, they start to enjoy it.
Not even drive... Article should have limited itself to "most" people. Weak minds can be influenced by anything, including video games. In my town two years back we have had a group of early teens mimicking GTA without even being able to drive. They literally went on GTA style rampage, beating anyone in sight, damaging property and cars,... without a second thought in a middle of the day. By the time they were caught (in less than half hour) there were people in critical condition, damage in millions,... Just one example. By their own admission they wanted to do GTA in real life.
You mean that parents can't blame their violent, under disciplined children on someone else. Wow looks like fox news has has a big news segment they have to replace
Not graphically explicit, though, even in a literary sense. It is basically a history of the Jewish nation. I don't consider it quite the same as chopping off people's heads and watching the blood squirt out of their necks. To each his own.

Violence is down but arrests are up? I wonder if the privatizing of prisons have anything to do with it.

That's why I don't read the Bible to my Children... violence, sex and war.l

It's always something. Beethoven, D&D, The Beatle, Judas Priest, Rap, Video Games... It never pans out.

I never said there was causation. Just pointing out that some of your facts were inaccurate.

Sorry, you are wrong. Hypocritical drug arrests are driving the arrest numbers up and it's true that privatized prisons are fueling this.

Killing babies, eye gouging, rivers of blood, eternal damnation in lake of fire... not graphic at all.

For who? Most of us have known this for a LONG time.

True that. Just annoying that people believe them just because they have a fancy name.

Don't be tellin' me that... All but one of my bank robberies have been inspired by Grand Theft Auto gaming sessions.
