2 years ago? Old news then..Still worthy of making front page for those who haven't heard about these tools and would like to play around with BackTrack or similar setups. Also good to frighten people to get off WEP already.

lol I know, what newbies! what we should do is remove all content on the internet that you learned two years back. that'll teach em.

All that and she never even "actually" cracked the WEP. Can hardly call it a proof-of-concept if you fail to prove your point.

Am I the only one here who didnt think that looked "easy" at all?, id have to say if my home wifi was being drained it wouldnt take long to figure out which pasty nerd in the vicinity was doing this purely on the apparent difficulty. I was expecting an exe that had a big button saying (crack neighbours wifi)

I honestly don't care if anyone gets on my network, as long as they don't use up all my bandwidth when I need it, I'm happy to provide free internet to anyone who needs it.

All the fun or speedy methods of WEP cracking involve active participation by the cracker. The original method involved just saving every packet that came your way, but this would take a prohibitively long time in a non-enterprise environment and if we're talking about people who are trying to crack WEP to cause mischief, they aren't going to be patient like that (nor would they care about the imagined moral distinction). Now, all commonly used methods involve tricking the router into thinking you are a legitimate client by spamming it with a certain type of packet, and then having it specifically send you a packet that contains the signature you need to crack the key. It's not like leaving your stuff out on your lawn, it's more like having your stuff locked up with an easily picked lock. Either way, people who crack WEP aren't just sniffing the key out of thin air anymore, they're actively breaking the security.

This. As long as they aren't using it for malicious purposes, why the hell not?

Guides like this have been a google search away for years, and identical guides have been here many times. Why is this news?

Agreed, I lost interest after a couple paragraphs. Way too much work for little reward.

"as long as they don't use up all my bandwidth..."Good luck with that philiosophy if you live in range of a lot of people with laptops..

I started to bookmark this in case I needed it when I was somewhere needing to get access, then I thought about that for a second...

I normally just kick my neighbors off when they get on my wireless. It's funny seeing what sites they go on.

Protip: Backtrack can do many more useful things than crack wep.

This definitely isn't the best tutorial. Aircrack-ng is pretty simple to use and they have tons of documentation on the web- it takes WEP IVs and pops out a key easy as pie. All you really need besides aircrack is a program to collect packets and the drivers to let your wireless card do so. The utilities that come with aircrack can do that for some cards, but I've found them to be partial to linux systems and less mainstream wireless adaptors (which sometimes support packet injection). There's a nice free program called Commview for wifi that can do packet collection for a lot of common hardware (intel, netgear) with Windows, and Backtrack is another, although it seems she had an inordinate amount of trouble getting a good version to run well.

Has no one heard of spoonwep? It is in backtrack, and provides a GUI for all of the things mentioned on lifehacker... it literally takes 2 minutes.
