The amount that comes into schools on the backs of college athletes is amazing...

It's a symbiotic relationship. No one forced the kids to be athletes; they're pursuing a dream and take the good with the bad. And, absent the appalling recent molestation charges, it's mostly pretty good.

Exploited? At my college most of the Scholarship money went to athletes. I'm sure they're wiping their tears with their grants and scholarships and easy classes.

These athletes need to take advantage of their scholarships and soak up all the education they can. Too many of them just aren't mature enough to realize what they have.

I am inclined to give zero f**ks about student athletes until Universities can actually manage to put education and research above sports in terms of funding and said student athletes are held to the same standard as every other person and given the same academic treatment as every other student.

I take it you don't support Occupy? That sort of rhetoric is similar to just saying "take or leave it" or "if you're not happy, leave".

You do know that with at least Football and Basketball (the two major college sports), there are rules by the respective pro leagues that forces students into college. The NBA has a 1 yr rule (1 yr of college) and they are looking to expand that to also say the athlete must also be 20 years old. I believe the NFL has 20 yr age min.

My point being, many of the top athletes are forced to play in college where they do not get paid.

Even for the 90%+ of the college athletes in football/basketball that don't have a shot at the pro's, they help create millions of dollars and all they get is free tuition? Many of these athletes would have qualified for other scholarships and many others for financial aid.

Also, many of these 'student-athletes' have strict limitations on jobs they can have in college, they spend about 1/2 of their non study related actives practicing or playing AND many of them seriously need spending cash. Why can't they be paid a reasonable pay to provide some spending cash?

Good point, they made a choice to compete in athletics. I think the NCAA rules are too restrictive in stifling the athletes ability to work during the off season.

Student Athletes should not be paid, they are already being compensated for their work (scholarships). It makes me mad when people suggest they should be paid on top of that. If you dont like this system quit and join a pro team. There are students who are working their butts off to pay tuition while juggling difficult classes without preferential class treatment. I dont care how much revenue you bring into the school, just because you cannot gauge how much any other student brings in doesnt mean they dont. Are you saying that if someone donates a few thousand dollars to the school (bringing in revenue) post graduation they should get tuition reimbursement and a salary? Althetes bring a lot to the school but so does everyone else so I will reiterate, athletes should not be paid or else everyone else should be paid as well. (Look at who generally donates millions to their alma mater, Its the engineer/business/science majors, not the Athletes I assure you)

I don't care if they don't finish their degree once their eligibility is up, I just care that those on scholarship don't have to either finish school, or pay back the scholarship money.

You made some real good points in your reply. I would say 99% of athletes do not make the pros. Something else to consider--many colleges actually lose money on sports such as football and non revenue producing sports like gymnastics, swimming, baseball, track, etc. and don't have the money like an Ohio State, Southern Cal, or Notre Dame to pay their athletes. I say let the athletes work part time jobs after their season or before their season. The NCAA is too omnipresent in the student-athletes' lives.

yes, at the bigger schools in the mega conferences like UCLA, USC, Ohio State, Michigan, North Carolina, Syracuse, etc...but schools with lesser programs often lose money.

Little children in sweatshops are paid $2 a day. It makes me mad when people suggest they should be paid on top of that. If they don't like it quit having kids. There are kids not in sweatshops who are working their butts off to die of dysentery.

*shrugs* If they make it into the pros, they'll make enough money to forget the exploitation. Then after their careers are over and they write their memoirs, they will write about how wonderful their college careers were.

How badly are they treated exactly? You mean they get to go to college for free to play a children's game? Sounds horrific.

Is there an internet school for knowing how to precisely ask the dumbest questions in post titles? I swear it's the same journalistic regimen that teaches reporters to ask questions like "So how do you feel knowing that guy raped your 6 yr old girl?"

Yes they get exploited....there's millions in cash on the line.
Yes that was a dumb question.

If this crap isn't evident, you're a glossy-eyed, ignorant fan.
