“Do” list in 2012?
1.Search keywords in Google.
2.Copy paste selected contents into notepad.
(Some people)
3.Verify the accuracy of selected contents.
4.Think creatively and write.
(Others)
3 (I). Re write in own words and grammar.
3 (II) Change words only.
3 (III). spin.
i think what you are describing is this... today the emphasis has moved away from memorizing and reciting that originated in the middle ages when there were no libraries and all the knowledge you had was what you took with you when you left school.
now pretty much the knowledge of all mankind is available and so large that memorizing is not possible. the skill set that replaced memorizing is understanding a problem and knowing where and how to find information... and what to do with it after you find it.
this ability to memorize and regurgitate has been considered synonymous with intelligence and doing well in school. but it was really a self selecting group with a certain learning style advantage. but the playing field has been leveled... or maybe has been given to people who can shuffle a large number of general ideas and the ability to creatively put together concepts in new ways.
i've worked both ways. doing it the old fashion way is always a trade off between time and available resources and ability to get it on paper in as few drafts as possible.
now you don't need to compromise and customize your subject matter because of the resources you have available. you have the opportunity to reach as far as you can to create exactly what you want to say. you can free write the information as you go... then move it around... make sure the grammar is right and not a compromise between typing the entire page over.
I actually did a presentation at my university on that exact topic. It turns out our memories aren't getting any worse, and we are starting to become a lot better at looking up and finding information. Our attention spans, however, might be a different story...

I do remember my first day of school. Not school, but the home of a friend where I ate my lunch. What does that say about me.
