Thing is, the lady isn't overweight, certainly not by US standards.
She was just taking a principled stance, and is moving on to a job in the industry she worked at before. She's not talking up some big monetary settlement either, just saying "I think it's wrong for them to ask that much information, so I refused."
Damn good for her, we need more people like that in this world, not less. She didn't behave out of shame, she did this out of principle.
I'm sorry these idiots fired her, and I hope someone like the ACLU comes to her aid. This is absurd. I supposed an employer could ask not only your sexual orientation, but whether you prefer to be on top or not. Or how many times a week you have a bowel movement. The invasion of privacy on American citizens in the name of "security" has gone way too far.
Stupid, she should have just fudged on that part of the form if she was insecure about her weight. To leave it blank, might as well refuse to tell them your name, color of your eyes, etc.
Reprimand yes, but termination is overkill.
I was fired from a Hoagies Corner / 711 store 14 years ago because I refused to wear the apron correctly, why? Because it didnt fit. 90% of the store was employed by women and they needed a man to work grave yard. Secret shopper gave me all high marks, except I wore the apron around my waist and not around my neck. This was a month after I got employee of the month. So I kinda feel for her, getting fired for something obviously BS. Like myself, a reprimand was in order, but not termination.
FTA: For the record, Iowa is one of nearly a dozen states that does not require weight on drivers' licenses – the state removed the requirement because so many people lied about it.

She's a librarian.
As hilarious as it sounds, librarians are at the forefront of bitchslapping the government every time they try to intrusively ride roughshod over our rights.
This is unbelievable, and a brilliant example of beaurocracy gone horribly wrong. I hope that she sues so that whatever is making the system look ridiculous can be brought to light and fixed.
Right, because people don't lose and gain weight all the time. And others who look at your ID all have magic carnival powers to accurately guess your weight.

I do not think employers need to know your weight.
As long as you can do your job, that is all that should matter.

They should use something less intrusive, like breast size or vaginal depth.
soleanthiaAug 6, 2010Buried
Why in the world would that information be needed? A person's weight changes all the time, it is intrusive and in no way useful.

The head librarian of the local branch was quoted a saying: "No fat chicks."

I'm guessing she works for the city. Call me crazy.

Isn't weight on drivers licenses?
And why is your weight intrusive? We can all see pretty much how you're weighing up. You can't hide being fat.

f**k yes, librarians.

Speak for yourself -- the last two times I voted they needed my ID.

City employee ID cards. Not the general public.
quirkopatraAug 6, 2010Buried
Why even a reprimand? I don't think it's any of their business.

Did you read the article. It has nothing to do with being insecure about her weight.

They send smokers outside because of the risk of 2nd hand exposure....is there a risk of contracting fat if you are in the same room as someone fat?
aunttalithaAug 6, 2010Buried
The woman isn't fat. It's a privacy issue. People can't read.
