Just because you shouldn't use them in business doesn't mean you shouldn't use them at all

This is stupid. The written word is terrible at conveying emotion, and the same words can have very different meanings if followed by a :) or :(. Emoticons are a useful tool for effective non-verbal communication.

Nah, you're probably a real man, as opposed to a college aged boy trying hard and failing to understand what makes real men, men. :)

Real men use smileys, bitches! >:O

"But grown men want to be taken seriously, unless they want to date 22 yr old's who just want to party; for the rest of their life." – wait, I'm 32 and that's *exactly* what I want. At which point do I become a grown man, then?

I used emoticons when the Internet was beginning. Sometimes colloquial text allows for misunderstandings, and emoticons can indicate sarcasm, and jokes, just as much as they were intended to.

I'm not saying we should write "LOL" at the end of every sentence, or ten exclamations marks, or cut every word down and remove all of its syllables. That s**t makes me despair for literacy. But well places emoticons can help convey emotion in text that might otherwise be cold, and there, I think it is appropriate.

It's all about your target audience and your relationship with them.

The article suggests that grown men should only use the more recent forms of communication for business and other serious use. I don't agree with that idea. Yes it would be inappropriate to put an emoticon in an email to someone informing them they lost a lot of money in the market. But there is nothing wrong with including a frowning face in a message explaining to a friend that you won't be going on that fun (and expensive) trip you had planned because you recently incurred such losses.

The author of the article ought to find himself some true friends that he is comfortable being himself with, rather than those with whom he needs to be concerned about his impression 100% of the time. Then, he would understand that there are places where emoticons are appropriate, and places where they are not.

He might even find he no longer has time to be a busybody worrying about whether the rest of us are using emoticons!

This article is, to be frank, just plain stupid. Words carry multiple meanings, and many sentences can be interpreted in a number of ways. Our inflection of tone allows us to signal our intended meaning in vocal communication, but something else must be done for text-only communication. It has nothing to do with writing capabilities (admittedly, grammar on the internet is an entirely different issue). Buried.

I'll jump in with the 10% crowd and say I'm definitely more of an (_o_) guy myself... which usually usually turns (_O_) in the end.

Why so serious? It's perfectly ok to use emoticons when chatting with friends.

Men don't have emotions. They have a bottle deep in their heart where emotions are trapped with a one way valve. Eventually the bottle blows up and that's when domestic disturbances happen. It's really very simple, why don't women understand this?

letherialDec 1, 2010Buried

no, our bottle stays together rather well, until some women comes along starting to ask why we don't feel, gets very curious, and opens that thing up ....then the domestic disturbances happen
