Geordi's visor wasn't like a pair of sunglasses. People couldnt just put them on to see through them. The visor was connected to implants in his temples. The visor scans bio-eletrical signals, heat signals, etc and feeds it into his brain. It sits over his eyes to give him an appropriate field of vision for a human. And in one episode, they connect his visor to the main screen on the bridge and they do get to see what he sees all the time.

I dont understand why this joke keeps getting made.
