Geordi's visor wasn't like a pair of sunglasses. People couldnt just put them on to see through them. The visor was connected to implants in his temples. The visor scans bio-eletrical signals, heat signals, etc and feeds it into his brain. It sits over his eyes to give him an appropriate field of vision for a human. And in one episode, they connect his visor to the main screen on the bridge and they do get to see what he sees all the time.

Why did Riker's beard disappear?

I would have thought Riker would have had "Number One" tattooed on him.

Because Geordi didn't have time to reverse the polarity before Wesley put the visor on.
