Can you imagine the force that would have been used if he'd done something that had a horrible impact on society or an economy, like injecting trillions of dollars into an economy to devalue the savings of millions of retirees, or maybe gave millionaire executives billions of dollars in ransom money to stop firing workers... what if he'd hired a bunch of slave wage laborers in China and caused their employers to treat them like animals to the point of suicide. What if he'd written laws that permitted outsourcing, which completely destroyed millions of lives, and made just a handful of people very wealthy. What if he'd developed a social network site that literally sucked up hours of billions of people's time every single day of the week. Wow! They'd have a fleet of ships pointing canons at those sorts of criminals.
Patents No, 17 years is good but only if the patent it ACTIVELY USED. 2 years if you don't use it (and seriously use it not a token use to keep the patent alive)
Copyright should be 5 years renewable every 5 years if its commercially viable (with SALES numbers not availability numbers)
Once it stops having commercial viability The copyright should change to "fair use" but holder still retains copyright for their lifespan to control "commercial" usage and license such use but personal non commercial usage would be unrestricted.
NO COPYRIGHT should ever be permitted to be help by a corporate entity. They are NOT PEOPLE and should not have that privilege.
SOFTWARE should never ever be patented. COPYRIGHT ONLY.
GENES and Medicines and Plants that ALREADY EXIST should never be patented.
No, I do not blame the U.S. It is entirely the New Zealand police's responsibility to not give in to pressure from the 'big boys'. I think that in this instance our police failed miserably.
A small ARMY invaded a rich guys house because he has a website that people were using to download movies, song, and other digital content.
Have we lost our way?
Is all this BS enforcement worth it? No!
How dare you compare the value of our freedom, our personal and civil liberties to the value of your e-books, games and movies.
Human life, and human quality of life vs. flawed copyright law? Do we really need to debate which is more important?
Lastly, if you aren't sympathetic to being human, how about a sense of proportion? The force used to raid that guys house is not really that much different from the force that raided Osama Bin Laden's house.
I saw the local news item last night. That kind of armed bust (with helicopters, armed forces etc), while common in the US, is very uncommon here in New Zealand. The cop in charge denied it on TV, but I'm pretty sure the US Feds are somehow pulling the strings.
Maybe the police think they are going after bin laden the zombie instead of some fat guy who can neither fight nor flight. Because they will make so much more sense.

Only let individuals have them. The ones who invented them and not the corporations. Like it was supposed to be.

Why the hell did they bring in helicopters and swat teams? From the looks of the house, this was a job for James Bond.
