The west needs to stay the f**k out of their internal issues. Let the Syrian people sort this out for themselves. Freedom/Liberty can't be given to a people. It needs to be taken and usually at a high and terrible cost. This is how pretty much all western nations obtained their democratic governments.
Anyway, we paid with 2 wars. The war against the Brits was to free the colonies from the British Monarchy. Then we had the CIVIL war. You do know what that is right? It's not when a people are fighting an outside power. It's when the people are fighting each other. Can you tell me the price we paid there? Which is EXACTLY what is going on in Syria. They are going to have their own civil war. No foreign nation has any business meddling in that. The Syrian people have a right to self-determination.
I am not really arguing one way or another whether or not a foreign power should intervene in Syria.
What i am saying however, is the fact that back in 1776, the war was a civil war. It was a war that the people fought against their own government. Many of the colonist's of the time fought to keep British rule. Many fought to dissolve British rule.
History has told the story of an "us against them" conflict. But it wasn't a black or white issue. Don't forget Norm, that there were many States unwilling to go along with the early intentions of the continental congress. Many States wanted to remain British.
Most States at that time, only wanted to have their grievances resolved by the king. They had no intention of declaring war on their own (for lack of better terms) motherland.
Norman, I'm really 'torn' on this one. I do believe there is a place for a body such as the UN to address horrible atrocities that occur within countries. Then again, I'm not in favor of getting involved in every single skirmish. For example, I still count getting involved in Yugoslavia as a positive and it perhaps took us to long to act. There, of course, ethnic cleansing occurred.
Well in the end it worked out in their favor. The US liberated them from German occupation. even thought their intention was never to help the colonies but to just stick it to the British Empire.

And look what it did to them...

The Brits were going to lose the fight. You are overstating their importance to the colonies winning.
