People are surprised? For the past 30 or so years men in pop culture have been depicted as moronic, single-minded, goofballs. How many sitcoms did we have to suffer through in the 80's and 90's where the background premise is "Man does something stupid, woman fixes the problem?"
There are very few male role models. Thanks to everything going ultra-PC, nearly all media revolves are women or advancing "equality" for women. Interestingly enough, there are now more opportunities for women than there are for men..

No kidding. I was in a childhood development class where I was the only man (hey the other option for that slot was a MATH class) and they decided to talk about negative gender stereotypes in media. I say 'gender' but they meant 'female'. When I brought up the dumb oafish dad I got looked at like... well, like I was a moron.

As a woman I say, BRING BACK THE MANLY MEN. Personally, I blame all the stupid feminists who, through seeking equality, have ended up trying to juggle both traditionally masculine and feminine roles, thus blurring the lines for both sexes. They need to get back in the kitchen and stay home with the kids before we end up with a completely androgynous dysfunctional population.
It's been going on for awhile. When was the last time we had a male star like Robert Mitchum? See him in "Cape Fear" and compare him to Robert De Niro in the remake. Mitchum seemed a hundred times more menacing.
