I traded a Nintendo Wii for a car last year. It was ugly but I drover it to work everyday with no problems.

The A/C alone was worth more than the Wii.

He's probably getting buried because that comment was just copy and pasted from the comment in that article.

I just sold my wife's CR-V on CL, probably 80% of the inquiries were scams. Watching out for scams should be No.1 on the Cl priority list.

The best part is that it wasn't even MY Wii, it was my brother's, I payed him back later, and still have my Wii.

Geekwrench, have you ever tried to find a $1,000 Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla? The reason I said American big three has nothing to do with build quality or reliability; instead, it’s all about cheap, plentiful parts.

Any $1,000 car, no matter who made it, is going to need work.

The Accord, Corolla and Camry are the top-selling cars of my LIFETIME.

So yes, there are PLENTY of parts.

i’m trying to sell a 1998 saturn sc2 for $1000 on seattle craigslist right now. there’s nothing wrong with it and i have gotten zer0 calls. it’s my daily driver. they should’ve set the bar @ $500. that’s the real price point for a “beater”.

Sure, asian cars tend to be more reliable, but anything that sells for under $1k is going to need replacement parts within a short time frame, and american parts are going to be far cheaper (in america).

This was a great article up until it mentioned the “Big 3″ american companies. I would never recommend 10 year old anything made in the US. youd be better off with a major brand asian car: toyota honda nissan…

oh please you can say that about any car manufacturer out there. My family buys Fords because we have had good luck with Fords. Other people swear by Toyotas for the same reason. Koreans in the US swear by Daewoos where as you'd have to pay most Americans to buy one here. It's all about personal experience.

Easy to deal with scams. Use your phone and put this at the bottom of the ad and create an account with an email address you setup only for craigslist.

Cash ONLY
No Trades
Will only respond to phone calls, no e-mail.

With that, I never get offers for trades, never check that email, and only deal with local buyers that are willing to meet me in a public place.

I just sold a Buick Lesabre on Craigslist last month for $500. It was a great car. It was definitely starting to show age but still running flawlessly and most of the rust was merely cosmetic, a feat for the Midwest. I had a few emails from people who never followed up, but I sold it in just a few days and was completely happy with the transaction.

When I got my DUI, my Explorer was impounded. I needed a work truck fast (I'm an electrician) so I bought a 1985 Ranger V6 automatic off craigslist for $1250. Ran well, looked decent, and the registration was paid up for another 6 months. I drove it for 6 months, then I let the reg expire cause it wouldn't pass smog, so I listed it on craigslist and sold it for $700.

The circle of life is a beautiful thing.

i shopped a camper van on craigslist earlier this year for a while, i was prepared to put some repair in and work on it as it was a second fun ride.what i got was amazing. this 74 chevy van i got because while custom and exotic it was standard 1970's chevy parts and simple analogue electronics. the amazing thing is i got it FREE as he wanted to to give it to someone serious of restoring it.
so with little work it runs and drives but its so old my biggest issues are i need to rewire the headlights and install seat belts.

side note this was a famous show van in the 80's and was published in truckin' as well as many other mags.

heres the van http://www.facebook.com/naturalhighvan

Gotta love craigslist. I got a 94 Impreza for $600. Runs great, though I had to do a little work on it. It's my daily driver and I'm quite content with it. With $1000, I'm sure you could get more than just a beater. I bet I could get a s**t car for a few hundred that would run.
