I've been on deviantart for close to 7 years, and I have to say, it has some of the same problems that digg has. The people who are popular continue to be increasingly more popular as more users join, and the people who never became well-known but have good art really don't get a chance. The sad thing is that, although there is a ton of great stuff on deviantArt, a lot of that stuff that becomes popular is total crap.
Fun Deviant Art Game For The Whole Family: Go there, search for any single English word, and see how many tries you need to not get a single furry hit.
I like how the compiler of the pictures writes "I've never seen this technique before", when it's f**king impressionism. Ever heard of Monet? I guess I shouldn't be surprised though; the "I consider DeviantArt the hub of extraordinary artists and brilliantly creative minds from around the world" should have tipped me off.
The two prostitutes painting is incredible. Real emotion and nice composition combined with expressive brush strokes. Hooray for non-plastic looking paintings.
It's true. I've seen it proven time and time again, if one submits a drawing (good or not, srsly) of Kingdom Hearts or Naruto fan art (there's more but those are the biggest ones) you will get all kinds of hits and comments and adds.
Like, if I want my gallery to be seen without advertising it myself, I have to draw fan art. No.
I've been a member for some time now too, and I totally agree with your comment.
I would also like to add that I'm not exactly pleased with the direction the site has been moving in recently, there seems to be a "new" version of the site released far too regularly.
Remember when "V5" came out, and at least half of the site was exactly the same (right down to the theme) as "V4"?
There a couple of cool new features I genuinely do like, but things like the Llama badge? That's not fun, and it's certainly not helpful. It just creates more spam.. it's like being poked on facebook.
Another game you can play is "the name of something you like (book/game/tv series/whatever) + Sonic". They will be a least one piece of work which has it's characters done in a Sonic the Hedgehog style.

Like this:
1) First one REPARATIONS. Nothing first page, nothing... oops http://browse.deviantart.com/?qh=&section=&q=banana#/d1i1mq2 WTF?
2) Second ROBUST. Nothing first page, but... http://browse.deviantart.com/?q=Robust&order=9&offset=96#/d1bx8jq Better watch out for that fox-banana.
3) Third ONOMATOPOETIC (http://browse.deviantart.com/?qh=&section=&q=onomatopoetic#/d1ionqx I think the term is "epic fail".
....
N) METRONOME... No, there's this abomination http://browse.deviantart.com/?q=metronome&order=9&offset=24#/d27qaw8 I give up.

I agree that DA has some great artists, but the noise to bandwidth ratio is as bad as when AOL let their idiots on Usenet for the first time.

There are some, but they're lone flowers on an enormous heap of manure.
