Settle down, Francis. Portal is like a 6 hour commitment at most, it's not going to displace Advanced Fluid Mechanics.
Also, it demonstrates some serious problem solving exercises. You should probably try it... couldn't be any less useful than sitting there and pouting on Digg.
Dude, you shouldn't imply that her lack of ability to beat the game was due to her being a philosophy major. Some of the people at the forefront of computer science (e.g. Douglas Hofstadter) are philosophers. In fact, at the highest levels, computer science and philosophy are more similar than different.
Depends on how you think things through. I'm a programmer, so Portal was easy as cake for me. My girlfriend, on the other hand, is a philosophy major and spent about 3 weeks beating it. She just doesn't have the problem solving abilities that Portal requires. Also, she spent the first few hours spinning in circles trying to figure out the controls.
Keep in mind, this is an all-male liberal arts college with a student body of approximately 900 (perfect Digg crowd?). Michael Abbott is a theater professor, but I can see how this fits into the college's overall curriculum. When I was a student, all sophomores had to take a class called Cultures & Traditions, which was essentially a year-long "important books" seminar that was largely discussion based. I wonder if this has replaced C&T.

Why wouldn't they be able to complete it? Because they can't solve one of the puzzles?
What if you can't solve one of your algebra problems?

Portal is a great problem solving game. Problem solving is a skill that you can improve if you try.

Portal left a huge mark on me and I can see how it affected my artistic side. Im applauding this in all honesty.
