Yep. I remember walking into a Toys'R'Us and seeing Mario Kart 64 playing on a demo console... then I saw the inside of the tunnel on the first strage (Luigi Circuit?) and my mind = blown.
I remember this Game Over screen precisely. My brother beat me for 3rd, and then as I drove over the little hill he said "They should have you blow up now!" only to have the bomb guy follow me over the hill and blow me up..... my brother was rolling.
Ah, yes. The old drive away in shame and get raped by a bomb ending.
I think most people missed this ending because they reset the game when they know they're doing poorly. Why bother finishing the last race when getting in first isn't even enough to make you place?
Saw a car ride over a banana peel the other day and literally just started laughing out loud. My wife asked me why, and I explained, and she didn't think it was that funny. Probably right. Just thought it odd to see a banana peel in the middle of the road, and then a car run over it. It spun out in my mind.
Also, the most ANNOYING "game over" screen ever! It took about 45 seconds to play through the animation, with no way to skip. It was faster just to reboot the system once you saw this screen.
