i used my masterball on the first abra i found because in the game manual, it mentioned some pokemon "you only have a chance of catching once" unfortunately for my young frail mind, a picture of a zubat and an abra where right next to the paragraph....

It told me I could catch "Any" Pokemon with it, so I tried to throw it at the Psychic Gym leader, Sabrina's Alakazam. Didn't work. :(
