I agree with your notion about over spending on the military, but why should it be anyone's job to provide for these people? We don't even have enough jobs for the non-homeless. Create the jobs, and the homeless problem will take care of itself without them needing a free ride from the working class. At that point, the ones who don't want to work can stay where they are and still not leech off our tax dollars.
And I was homeless for a year from 2005-2006. Not living with relatives or friends homeless, living in the streets homeless. Never begged, never applied for welfare, I worked my way out of it after getting a part-time job as a dish washer at a small coffee shop. Do I want a cookie? Nope, but I can tell you the majority of the homeless are there because they want to be (because they'd rather be there than to work or have responsibilities) - trust me, I lived around many of them for the time I was out there.
It's called "social assistance" (AKA: welfare). While there is no question about it's effectiveness at helping people stay on their feet (I myself once received payments I badly needed that helped me stay stable through a rough time and pursue my IT career through college, which led to the full-time, relatively stable [all things considered] and self-sufficient job I'm at today)- there is an overwhelming majority of welfare recipients that do not have the incentive, ambition or drive needed to move forward and get their lives in order.
I've seen entire families make themselves completely dependant on the welfare system in my country, and introduce their sons and daughters to it once they become of age. They do not push themselves on to further their education or enter the workforce- because in their minds they do not feel they need to, and feel they are "entitled" to the government cheques coming in. And they will try to lie, cheat, and otherwise deceive the government agencies giving them the money, just so they can see another monthly pay-cheque coming in.
I'll put my sympathy with those who work hard and fail, not with those who put no effort in. Having a particular set of genetics has given this man more than his fair share of chances.
I feel no sympathy for this guy at all. He blew ALL of his money on drugs after he got his 15 minutes of fame and a very high paying job. He's a horrible person and his life reflects that. He's the type of person that screws up opportunities and no amount of giving him a free ride will save him. You can't help those that don't want to help themselves. There's millions more people who are far more deserving yet get much less.

Yes, many (I don't know if I'd venture to say "most") are mentally ill or addicted to drugs. Those people need treatment, and many in the mentally ill category could work, given the proper treatments and guidance. They have Fairhaven people making light bulbs and working at Krafmaid Cabinetry here. I think it's a great program. It helps them become independent, build confidence, earn their own living and become productive members of society.
What a wonderful thing to do for another that is needing help. Mr. Ted Williams is truly trying and others can give him back his dignity and any thing else that he lost during those years.
