Most of my favorite books are sci-fi/fantasy series.

Notice how there are no recently published authors on that list. They are all cashing in with huge series.

An equally good article would be all the SF writers that shouldn't have written series or trilogies...

I'll start with Frank Herbert - doomed a decent book to be a craptastic series.

Not to mention all the SF writers that should have stuck with Hallmark cards - far too many to name, far too painful to read, far too expensive to find out.

classydave - All those writers who should have stuck with Hallmark cards are the ones which make Sturgeon's Law so very very true. To be honest, I've found that it tends to hold true in every human field of endeavor - 90% of musicians, artists, politicians, etc etc.

Harlan Ellison - one of my all time fave sci-fi writers who wrote for the Twillight Zone tv series, created the premise in the Twillight Zone episode Soldier that James Cameron ripped off of to make the Terminator.

If anyone ever gets the chance read his novel I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream.
