I don't hold much hope for the media to ever get it right.

Hope Toyota will get the apology it deserves.

Amen. And so does Congress, for bringing the Toyota execs in to a kangaroo hearing.

Congress follows the media. It's like the blind leading the blind in a circle of never-ending hysteria.

Who cares if the problem was mechanical and not electronic. There were still problems with the accelerator and floor mats, some of which were installed by Toyota dealers. We know that in at least some of the cases, Toyota was at fault and they covered that up early on. This is a silly article, that highlights facts in favor of the author's argument and glosses over contrary facts. Here is an example:

"Yes, Toyota's electronic systems were proven not to be the cause of any problem or fatality. The culprit was floor mats incorrectly installed, either by the dealership or by the Toyota and Lexus models' owners, that were catching and holding the gas pedal in place. Also, some vehicles had sticky accelerators."

Dont think it did much... they have Honda, Nissan, VW, Kia, Hyundai etc to deal with after all.

As media sources are driven to the web, and there driven by click-through rates and pageviews, I don't see any force at play which will discourage sensationalism, rather the trend seems more likely to be exacerbated.

Rev. Jesse Jackson should be the one to demand the apology.

"Apologiiiiiiiize..."

wonder how much all the bad press benefitted GM, Ford, and Chrysler.

I agree completely. The article excoriates "the media", yet this guy glosses things over when they're not convenient for him and then makes assertions and doesn't support them with facts or sources. They very well might be true, but if you can't show me as an impartial reader and a critical thinker why your assertions are true, then why should I believe you?

I'm not swayed at all. In fact, I expect more from someone who purports to be an award-winning business journalist.

Isn't the real problem that people just don't question anything? When you compound this with the fact that nobody on the media side of the equation checks facts anymore, all you end up with is erroneous information.

Not to mention the fact that if they HADN'T been so alarmist, and another person had died or been injured due to the defects, people would have said that the media didn't do their job.

Well, ideally we can hold Congress accountable for their actions rather than blaming the media for deceiving our poor government leadership.

Yeah, apparently you're being buried because people have forgotten the legitimate recalls that Toyota was slow to make. If they'd been upfront from day one, the congressional action wouldn't have been necessary.

Way to call it like it is. Katie Couric should read this.
