SOPA? How about we go after it's twin brother from the Senate called Protect IP. That's the bill that's actually gotten through the Committee process and set to be voted on any day now!
If I didn't know any better I'd say there's a conspiracy going on to purposely single out SOPA for extra scrutiny while it's virtually identical counterpart Protect IP gets snuck in through the back door before Christmas break.
The problem is that this law will not only stop piracy - it will stop your freedom of expression - the whole internet was built on the idea of free flow of information regardless of content. Who are YOU to say what is legal and illegal? Is ALL stuff on the Pirate Bay illegal? (no it is NOT).
File sharing creates innovation. Bit torrent is good example of the innovations that piracy has brought us.
I'll tell you what KILLS innovations though: draconian copyright laws. Going to jail for watching a movie you have not paid for is wrong - and should be punishable by let us say $80 or something in that ball park, equivalent to a speeding fine. But we have all heard the stories of people threatened by movie companies and the music industry.
I say, stick those corporate f**kers in jail for ripping artists and customers off.
Besides the creepy big brother aspect it now seems clear that SOPA is specifically designed to protect big business and to help them crush any emerging opposition, merely by pointing an accusing finger. After all, they will have the biggest say in who gets shutdown and they're the ones who will be listened to by the ISP's. No evidence will be required, but proof of non-infringement will be required to get a site backup, by which time a small start up company will have been financially ruined!
SOPA, Protect-IP, National Defense Authorization Act - Yep we don't give a crap about liberty anymore. We only care about 'safety'. Fear is the greatest invention of the elite. Now, I am not saying that 'they' invented (no, I am not a tool) fear; what I am saying is that they leverage fear against 'we the people'. 9/11 saw the greatest mass-adoption of safety over liberty. I have not, in my short lifetime, seen a solid example of a society valuing safety as a top priority while at the same time protecting liberty. These three feces making their respective ways through congress right now are a direct personal affront to my liberty. Our elected representatives need to be held to account for their respective defections from their duties to their constituents. Please visit open congress to see how your representative is representing your interests.
The concept of the internet is inspiring. The disease of power-mongering has poisoned the application of the concept. I do hope that we awake from our 'safe' slumbers soon...
Based on these sections, all the worst things you hear about SOPA are true.
Page 10: lines 7-9
Pages 12/13: lines 22-10 (website itself, foreign)
Page 14: lines 2-6 (Service providers to foreign site)
Page 15: lines 17-20 (Search engines to foreign site)
Page 16: lines 3-8 (payment services to foreign site)
Pages 17/18: lines 11-2 (advertisers on foreign site)
Pages 18/19: lines 17-20(enforcement of the above)
Page 21: The entire immunity section (the government isn’t responsible for the problems it causes)
The above portions don’t necessarily have to do with punishment due to the foreign website, but instead focus on punishing everyone else instead. Oh, and the everyone else are people in the US...probably you.
Page 24: lines 21-24
Page 27: lines 7-12 (Paysites can’t pay people the money they stole fair and square, regardless of other binding agreements)
Page 27: lines 16-21 (Can’t advertise for or on the site or your ass is grass)
Page 28: lines 18-25 (at least this law creates jobs)
Sections 104 and 105 have the same sort of thing, but just apply to coercing people to rat out others.
Page 49 might curb some spam.
Title 2 is particularly grotesque, but you have to look close.
Page 60/61: lines 8-4 (FedEx and UPS better shut down, because willing and knowing are two different things)
Page 63: lines 5-13 ( your standard government catch all)
Page 67: section 204 (not sure, but this sounds like it is retroactive)
I am a big supporter of copyright law enforcement, but there is a point where things get a bit oppressive and censorshippy.
There is a lot more evil in there too, like making the service provider, search engine, payment service, or advertiser justify to the website why they are canning their various services instead of the Attorney General having to face up to their own actions. Or, the fact that the law repeatedly refers to “U.S. property” and not individual property, assuming now that everything belongs to the United States as a collective.
All this essentially gives the Executive branch to do what they want, without oversight or reason, to the internet. WooHoo!

If you are not in the area in another state or US ex-pat please start calling your congressmen and senators. Let them know you will not stand for this act if it passes and their will be hell to pay come election day or sooner if knowledge of the corruption comes to light.
If you are a foreign compatriot of the open and free internet, take it to the closest US Embassy or US Consulate at the same time and let them know, you are not happy.
I'm pretty sure Lamar Smith listened to a song that was "illegally" downloaded. If think if this pass we should all just go to jail. At least the rent is free there.

Right now, the internet is for everyone. If the law is passed it will be just another medium for only the very rich.

SOPA = Soup in Spanish
Was someone hungry when they were trying to come up with the acronym for this steamy pile?

Looking at the sides for and against this makes your head explode... McCain and Al Franken on one side vs Pelosi and Ron Paul? How f**ked up is that.
