Apple has standards that they expect their 3rd parties to adhere to. Does that always work? No, but it's farther than nearly any other company you might care to name (how does the company that makes your computer or cell phone compare?). They have named their suppliers and regularly inspect their facilities. Again more than most companies bother with.
Be careful you don't trip over your indignant rage before making judgement calls
Many Apple users DO question Apple on their policies concerning contractors. They just delivered a petition calling on Apple to do better in a high profile way at their most frequented stores.
I guess my point is why isn't Dell, HP, or Acer held to the same standards? If anything, they're getting the free pass
Apple's stock is reflecting the fact that it is one of the few leaders in the world of new innovation. Most of the other companies just copy; and say me too. You never see Apple doing that. Google and Microsoft many times see another company making a new and innovative product, they just use their cash and go out and buy the company and put it into their group of products, like they were the ones that did it. When all they did was find out the company was doing something new and good, then bought it.
That would be like me buying and iPad and saying that I invented it!
Any one else finding it strange that the leading computer company in the world is using the same manufacturing company to make its hardware as the 3 runners up?
I cannot think of another industry offhand which has a similar situation.
If this situation arose from a merger, I doubt European regulators would allow it.
However, since the only victims of such a near monopoly on manufacturing is labor not competing corporations, I doubt we will see any regulators put the situation under an antitrust microscope.
In any case, people who look at a company that makes goods for one computer company and studiously avoid noticing its staff makes goods for all the major competitors as well are choosing to look at the world through a pinhole camera.
An even greater irony is that Microsoft has sued them for patent violations.
To be honest I expect Apple to act decently, they don't they don't get my money. Until very recently I would have said Nokia, but they seem to be laying off their local workers. IMHO to make it profitable to sell off.
I agree. I'm not saying Apple is hippy cool or any other pie in the sky judgement call. They're a corporation, no better or worse than any other and should be held to decency standards concerning their contractors they use to make the products so many people buy. It's the hypocrital rage from people like the OP who seem to think Apple is the only company to use Chinese contractors to make their stuff and the companies whose products they buy are made with marshmellow fluff and unicorns with happy elves.
All I'm saying is that before some people get on their high horse and scream for Apple to change their contractors, take a better look at what the makers of the stuff you like do in comparison
You are ignoring the FACT that Apple is trying to fix things, almost alone in the tech industry.
Whatever you are typing on now made chinese workers suffer more than any Apple device...
That is the problem. You and others complain only about Apple is who trying ti improve things, letting other companies that stay silent alone. You should be going after eery single other company on earth BEFORE you say word one about Apple and China, to do anything else is the ultimate in hypocrisy and enablement.
I will make judgement calls based on what I believe not how you see the world. Thanks for your take on it, I still hold ALL companies at the same standard. Apple lost my respect.
They have been running away from their hippy cool for a long time. It is working less and less for them as time goes on. They still live on image now. I think they need to be start being careful. Being ethical is often less profitable short term. But but PR can destroy even the largest company. I still see Sony putting garbage on their CD's as being justification for not buying their product.
That is false, Apple uses FoxConn which mostly has adult workers. Apple has also been trying to improve conditions, unlike whatever device you prefer which was ALSO made in China, by a company that cared less than Apple how it was made.

because they use child labor. It's easy when you loose your morals and commit to profits over people.

That's not the Apple way...

They're using the same manufacturer as Microsoft Xbox, HP, Dell, and Acer computers, etc.
